Human-Centred Design (HCD) for Healthcare and Community

I help healthcare teams understand problems and design practical solutions that work for both patients and providers. Using a human-centred approach, I work closely with teams to create tools and processes that are easy to use, effective, and tailored to their specific needs.

  • Facilitate co-creation workshops with healthcare providers, educators, and community stakeholders

  • Synthesize diverse insights into practical, user-friendly solutions

  • Align stakeholders around shared goals for greater impact

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Simplify complex medical concepts into clear, actionable educational materials

  • Create asynchronous learning modules and patient education tools to boost understanding and engagement

  • Provide resources that support effective communication and informed decision-making for healthcare teams

Knowledge Translation and Education

  • Create patient-facing materials like brochures, clinical algorithms, and interactive guides

  • Customize resources for specific healthcare challenges (e.g., diabetes, β-lactam allergies, cancer diagnosis)

  • Use user feedback and iterative testing to ensure clarity, engagement, and effectiveness

Patient-Centred Resource Development

Healthcare Tool Development

  • Design and implement algorithms, decision-support tools, and clinical pathways to streamline care

  • Enhance EHRs with tailored tools for specific needs (e.g., cirrhosis management, infection prevention)

  • Develop scalable, user-tested solutions for widespread healthcare adoption

  • Design interventions to improve healthcare access for rural, newcomer, and marginalized communities.

  • Develop culturally appropriate patient education tools and resources.

  • Partner with communities to co-create inclusive healthcare solutions.

Equity-Focused Healthcare Solutions

Clinical Algorithm Design Through Human-Centred Design

I specialize in designing clinical algorithms and decision-support tools that are not only evidence-based, but also intuitive, usable, and tailored to the real-world needs of healthcare providers and patients. By applying a human-centred design (HCD) approach, I work closely with interdisciplinary teams to co-develop algorithms that support safer, more effective, and more equitable care delivery.

What I Offer:

  • Needs Assessment & Process Mapping: Collaborate with clinicians, patients, and administrators to understand clinical workflows, identify pain points, and map the real-world steps of diagnosis and treatment.

  • Co-Design & Prototyping: Facilitate iterative design sessions with end users (e.g., physicians, pharmacists, educators) to draft, test, and refine algorithm logic, flow, and format.

  • Accessibility & Implementation: Translate clinical guidelines into clear, actionable formats—printable pocket tools, interactive PDFs, or EMR-integrated visuals—designed to reduce cognitive load and support decision-making at the point of care.

  • Patient-Facing Companion Tools: Where relevant, develop lay-language versions of clinical algorithms to enhance shared decision-making and patient education.

  • Iterative Testing: Conduct usability testing with target users to assess comprehension, clarity, and real-world integration. Feedback loops ensure tools are practical, adoptable, and aligned with clinical needs.

Project Examples:

  • Antibiotic prophylaxis algorithms for GBS and C-section SSI prevention in pregnancy

  • Simplified pathway for fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) referral and CDI management

  • Risk stratification and de-labelling algorithm for β-lactam allergies

  • Decision-support visuals for hepatic encephalopathy and cirrhosis management in EMR systems

Co-Designing for Impact

I translate research insights into actionable service design solutions by:

  • Conducting journey mapping to identify pain points and gaps in healthcare delivery.

  • Facilitating co-design workshops that bring together clinicians and community members.

  • Developing and testing patient-centered education tools, decision aids, and digital health solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing healthcare systems

Facilitating Human-Centred Design in Healthcare

My work involves facilitating user research, co-design workshops, and usability testing with healthcare practitioners, patients, and community groups to uncover challenges, needs, and opportunities for innovation.

Expertise in Qualitative Data Collection

I have extensive experience leading interviews, focus groups, and usability testing sessions with:

  • Physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals to refine clinical workflows and digital health tools.

  • Diabetes educators and endocrinologists to improve patient education and CGM usability.

  • Infectious disease specialists and pharmacists to optimize antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.

  • Patients, newcomers, and marginalized communities to develop culturally relevant, accessible healthcare resources.

Bridging Research & Implementation

Using a human-centred approach, I synthesize qualitative data into:

  • Clinical decision support tools that improve provider workflows.

  • Patient-facing educational resources that enhance health literacy.

  • Referral pathways and care models that streamline service delivery.

  • Digital health solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing systems.
